چکیده

The study of the interaction of lightning electromagnetic fields with electrical systems and the design of appropriate protection strategies are generally based on statistical distributions of the lightning current measured at the channel base using either instrumented towers or artificial initiation of lightning using rockets. Recent studies based both on numerical modeling and experimental observations have shown that the presence of the structure struck by (or used to initiate) lightning does affect the current measurement in a way depending upon the geometry of the structure itself, compromising therefore the reliability of the statistics adopted so far for lightning data. The aim of this thesis is to provide new elements (from both theoretical and experimental investigations) to improve the understanding of the electromagnetic consequences of the impact of lightning return strokes to tall structures. Chapter 2 introduces to the phenomenology of cloud-to-ground lightning and the importance of lightning return-stroke modeling. Among the different classes of return-stroke models existing in the literature, the attention is focused in this thesis on the so-called engineering models, which allow describing the current distribution along the channel as a function of the current at the channel base and the return-stroke speed, two quantities for which data can be obtained experimentally. After presenting a review of five engineering return-stroke models describing lightning strikes to ground, the extension of the engineering models to take into account the presence of an elevated strike object is presented and discussed. The original contributions of this thesis, consisting of both theoretical and experimental works, are presented in Chapters 3 through 6.

Determination of lightning currents from far electromagnetic fields: Effect of a strike object

We discuss in this paper the influence of the presence of an elevated strike object on the peak of the lightning return stroke current determined from remote field measurements. We develop analytical expressions relating the lightning return stroke channel-base current and the far electromagnetic field for different specific cases, namely, (1) ground-initiated return strokes (classical transmis...

Electromagnetic Field Due to Lightning Strikes to Mountainous Ground

The produced electric and magnetic fields due to lightning strikes to mountainous ground are determined in this paper. For the sake of simplicity a cone-shaped ground with finite conductivity is assumed to represent a natural nonflat ground. By this assumption, we deal with an axillary symmetrical structure so we use the cylindrical 2D-FDTD to save the simulation memory and time, dramatically. ...

Microwave radio emissions of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes

Article history: Received 6 August 2012 Received in revised form 31 January 2013 Accepted 6 February 2013 We report preliminary results of a new observational study of microwave-frequency electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by lightning discharge processes. Radiation was observed with a ceramic patch antenna and a digital radio receiver tuned to a center frequency of 1.63 GHz and a bandwi...

Expressions for far electric fields produced at an arbitrary altitude by lightning return strokes

[1] Electromagnetic fields produced at high altitudes by return strokes in cloud-to-ground lightning are needed in studies of transient luminous events in the mesosphere. Such calculations require the use of a lightning return stroke model. Two of the widely used return stroke models are (1) the modified transmission line model with exponential decay (MTLE) of current with height and (2) the mo...

Tall-Structure Lightning Return-Stroke Modelling

A lightning return-stroke model, based on the lightning return-stroke current derivative measured at the Toronto CN Tower is presented in this paper. A 3-section transmission line representation of the CN Tower along with the derivative of the modified Heidler function is used to simulate the measured current derivative signal. Reflections from major structural discontinuities of the CN Tower a...
